Propecia is a drug that is widely used to treat male balding of the head. This medication can be effective when hair is thinning on the scalp, or if the hairline is receding. Propecia contains finasteride which is supplied as oral tablets of 1mg each.
How does Propecia work?

Propecia decreases the release of the hormone DHT. When this hormone is restricted, hair loss is slowed down and re-growth can occur. This medication only affects hair on the head. Propecia is for men only. Women and children are not permitted to use this drug.
How is Propecia taken?
This medication must be used as prescribed. The dose is usually taken once a day.
Never allow a pregnant woman to handle a crushed tablet. The contents can be absorbed by the skin, and this could damage her unborn baby.
To get the maximum benefits from Propecia you must use it regularly. Take your dose at the same time each day. You may not notice any benefits for up to 3 months.
In order to maintain any hair growth, you will need to continue using Propecia. When treatment has ceased, you will lose any new growth within a year.
Side effects
You may experience a decrease in sexual desire and your sexual ability. Propecia may also reduce the amount of semen produced in your body. Generally these symptoms do not last long. But if they do persist, speak to your doctor.
Although unlikely to occur, some serious side effects are: discharge from the nipple, breast lumps, breast tenderness or enlargement, painful testicles, and decreased urination.
These should be referred to your doctor immediately.
If you get very dizzy, have difficulty breathing, or break out in hives, a rash or swelling in and around your face, this could be an allergic reaction. Be sure to get emergency assistance right away.
If you experience any other bothersome symptoms while using Propecia, speak to your doctor.
Warnings
Before starting treatment with Propecia, inform your doctor if you are allergic to finasteride or any other substance.
Tell your doctor if you have had prostate cancer, liver problems or any urinary tract infections.
Do not alter the prescribed dose without speaking to your doctor.
If you have a PSA test scheduled, be sure to tell the laboratory staff that you are using Propecia. Finasteride may interfere with the accuracy of such a test.
Your doctor will show you how to check your breasts and testicles for lumps. Make sure you do this regularly.
If you miss a dose of Propecia, you may take it as long as there is a significant period of time before the next scheduled dose. Don't take a double dose. If you are unsure, do not take the missed dose.
When you have been sitting down or lying down, get up slowly because Propecia can cause dizziness if you rise too quickly. You may also be unsteady on your feet for a while.
This medication should be stored in a dry, cool place, out of the reach of children. Make sure the bottle top is tightly closed.
